Mike Carney Passed Away Recently | | SYSA and SSRA Legend Mike Carney passed away during his morning jog through a park on December 7. Mike touched the lives of countless referees, players and volunteers through his tireless work with the Beacon Hill Soccer Community since he founded the club in 1985. Mike showed us how to serve hard to reach youth in our community. He showed us how we can make a meaningful impact on the lives of so many through reffing, coaching and being available. So many of them desperately needed a healthy pathway to positive development.
As of late, along with officiating countless games he was a BHYS coach for boys team Rage from Aki Kurose SPS. Like many times before, he built this team of underprivileged kids by visiting them at home and driving them to the field. They developed a deep appreciation for his compassionate mentoring. One BH Rage player wrote, "Descansa en pass coach y mietras que you juegeu futbol simpre te recordare como mi mejor coach y gracias por todas las memorias de futbol."
Michael James “Mike” Carney passed away unexpectedly early Monday, December 7, 2020. Mike grew up on Seattle’s Capitol Hill. As an engineer, Mike’s 40 years of work included projects at dams throughout the U.S. and around the world including sites in South Korea, Africa, Panama & India. Away from work, Mike coached soccer teams in the Beacon Hill area. For 45 years Mike focused on the development of local underprivileged players. In his spare time, Mike volunteered for St. Mary’s Food Bank and winter shelter, advocated for motor-less transportation, played music, and made balloon creations at community events for children of all ages. Mike generously offered his thoughts, books, and a helping hand. His influence will remain with all he helped. His life will be forever cherished in the lives of his family: his spouse Martina, his four children by birth (John, Maria, Luke & Blaise) with former spouse Terri, his four children by marriage (Gabriela, Luis, Alba & Felipe), his siblings (Jean, Ki, Pat, Coleen, Maureen, Eileen, Mary, Tim, Bridget, Lisa, Jim & Joe), his seven grandchildren, the Beacon Hill Youth Soccer team, friends and extended family.
