New Referee InformationPrintable

Seattle Soccer Referee Association (SSRA)

You have finally passed your tests and are now certified as a US Soccer Referee! Here are some basics to get you started.

UNIFORMS: Uniforms can be expensive. You can search online and find multiple resources. It is best to start out with a yellow shirt and add colors as you referee longer. If you referee a team that has yellow jerseys, you can wear a penny over your jersey. Make sure to have black referee socks and black shorts without sports logos or other colors. The easiest way to do this, is to buy referee shorts with the starter kit. Black soccer shoes will work fine.

REGISTER WITH SEATTLE REFEREE ASSOCIATION: You can request an account with Seattle Referees on seattlerefs.org on the home page under login tab you will see a link to register. Compete that information - it generally takes up to 48 hours for your registration to be processed and you should receive an email with instructions on how to login and set up your account. If you have questions please email info@seattlerefs.org. There is also a link at the bottom of this page that will take you to the registration page.

FINDING GAMES: As a new referee, you will probably start off working the younger aged recreational teams. Seattle has a number of recreational clubs grouped by neighborhoods. Each club has an assignor who matches referees to games. The games are posted on the Seattle Referee website.

After logging in, you will look on the left side of the home page. There is a list of headings. Find REFEREE and click on it.

UNDER REFEREE, YOU WILL SEE MATCH INQUIRY. After clicking on that, you will see a list of open games. If you do not see any games, it means that the positions are all filled and there are no open games. If you see an envelope icon to the right of the name of the field, it means you can request the game. Clicking on the envelope sends a message to the assignor that you are available for the game and want to referee that match. If the assignor puts you on the match, you will get an email saying that you have been assigned the match. You then log on and if you can still work the match, you click on the Green question mark icon. If, for some reason, you can not work the match any longer, you click the Red question mark. This means you are not expected to show up. If you do not get an email, it means you did not get the match, and someone else was assigned.

The grid at the top of the Inquiry page can be customized however you would like it; you can search by date, field, position etc. Just experiment with the site and you can see what works best for you. As a note, changing the drop down menu for REFEREE and ASSISTANT REFEREE at the top, to all, will allow you to see all games and all filled positions whether they are open or not.

AFTER THE MATCH: When you get home, you will need to file a Match Report. You will be prompted that you are missing a report when you log in. You need to fill out the number of cards (zero if there were none) and the scores for each team. Use the drop down menu if there is something unusual you need to report. Common reasons are a referee change, for example, no AR was assigned, but one showed up, a center switching with an AR. Each member of the crew should note changes to ensure proper payment to the referee and proper billing to the client. Remember, the Match Report serves as an invoice to the club and it is vital that it be correct.
